Nashville-based Adia Victoria’s music defies easy categorization. With a voice that is as breathy as it is assured, she weaves captivating tales of the South. A Southern Gothic, her enthralling 2021 album, explores themes of cultural identity, memory and crafts songs in the framework of the blues with an utterly contemporary voice. Rolling Stone called this essential body of work, in which Margo Price, T Bone Burnett and Jason Isbell collaborate, “a declarative and delicate work of roots reclamation.” Much as fellow musician-historian Rhiannon Giddens elevates the voices and history of Black Americans, Adia, too takes on the Nashville establishment with what she calls the whitewashing of Black history. Hers is an important voice for the ages, past, present and future. We’re proud to introduce her to you.
