Ben Harper is a force; there’s really no other way to put it. Musically, he’s a seeker and never stops exploring the possibilities. This is apparent by the wide range of styles and influences displayed in his records, be they solo efforts, in any one of the numerous collaborations he’s taken part of, or with his stellar band, The Innocent Criminals.

None other than Taj Mahal gave Ben his first major tour in the early 1990s, thus letting the proverbial cat out of the bag. When we say he’s a force, what we mean is that he’s brilliant — a phenomenal guitarist, an insightful lyricist, and a fearlessly honest performer. He is a truth-teller, first and foremost.

When he works with others such as Charlie Musselwhite, The Blind Boys of Alabama, or Dhani Harrrison and Joseph Arthur, the synergy created results in powerful, authentic music, each artist teasing something divine from the other. It’s the essence of what makes a great collaboration. For the Charlie Musselwhite and The Blind Boys records, the fruitful partnership resulted in Grammy awards.

Not only is he a musical force, but when it comes to his activist heart, his is a power that moves mountains. Whether environment, social justice, education or alleviating the woes of the less fortunate, Ben throws his passion into the numerous causes he supports. Among them are The Surfriders Foundation, Feeding America, LIFT and the Tony Hawke Foundation.
