Like all the best songwriters, Carl “Buffalo” Nichols’ intent is to tell you a story. But not just any story. Through his blues and folk songscapes, he gives voice to the history behind the music. Once he got his first guitar as a youth, he started down a winding path to the fulfillment of his vision. Life overseas, far from Milwaukee, opened his eyes and ears to jazz in Ukraine and the blues sung by Black American ex-pats in Berlin bars. He returned to the U.S. more sure of his path. With just his guitar and voice on his 2021 eponymous record, he links the past with the present, in his own way. It’s a stripped down, honest record, filled with the pain of the past and the hope of the present.
