Lukas Nelson was born into a legendary musical family, but everything he has created in the course of his own stellar career is wrought from his natural talent and hard work. Willie Nelson’s son has that familiar and beloved “Willie sound,” to his voice, and his music is rooted in the Texas, country, swing and storytelling traditions of his father’s work, but Lukas Nelson’s music offers a fresh update, served on a rock and roll platter and garnished with songs laden with topicality and hope.
The man loves, almost more than anything, playing live. His shows are uplifting, emotional and crackling with energy. His newest record, Sticks and Stones, achieves the nearly impossible — he captures that lightning in a bottle.
“I started to realize that all of my favorite songs that I’ve written are written for what I love to do live,” he says. “And what I love to do live is play country soul funk. Something with a nice backbeat, something you can move to, and something that makes you want to sing along and shout out at the top of your lungs.”
A family man, a disher of Dad jokes and a humble human unafraid to laugh at himself, the new record and tour reflect a new chapter in the Lukas Nelson story. Despite his journey to clarity and positive self-care, in the music he performs, the point really is to dance, let go, forget your troubles and keep it positive.
“There’s such a thing as too much reflection, I think. There’s a time where you need to let it all go and celebrate life and maybe get up off your seat and dance a little bit. Or sway quietly and feel loved and feel connected in a positive and uplifting way. Or if the song isn’t positive, at least it brings you to a place where you can let go and forget about life for a bit or remember it through a good lens.”
We’re so excited to have Lukas visit us in Telluride again. We so need that great reminder to celebrate life.
