The Marcus King Band - "Side Door" Live at Telluride Blues & Brews Festival

You’re not kidding around when it comes to electric blues-rock and neither is Marcus King. The son of a son of a bluesman, the Greensville, South Carolina native has just achieved legal drinking age and is already making music lovers sit bolt upright with his mature songwriting, smoky vocals and six-string prowess. Warren Haynes produced and plays on his latest album, The Marcus King Band. That should tell you something about this young man’s cred. And Derek Trucks – whose own child-prodigy-to-established-icon path brings to mind Marcus King’s future – contributes to this must-have record. Marcus describes his music as “soul-influenced psychedelic southern rock,” and that pretty much nails it. His kickass band deserves mention. They are Jack Ryan on drums and percussion, Stephen Campbell on bass, Dean Mitchell on saxophone, and Justin Johnson on trumpet, trombone and backing vocals. The Marcus King Band is thrilling live and thanks to constant touring, the cat’s out of the bag. He’s here to stay. Count yourself among his earliest fans and hang on for the ride. There are many more miles to go.
